Framing a national common law has been one of the three core, decades-old promises of Modi's Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP). The northern state of Uttarakhand, nestled in the Himalayan foothills, is expected to unveil a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) bill next week, officials said. A committee set up in Uttarakhand in 2022 to draft the code will submit its work to the state government on Friday. "Several state governments across India are looking at whether a uniform civil code could be implemented," Nalin Kohli, a national BJP spokesperson said. Personal laws can be legislated by both federal and state governments, and other BJP-ruled states have said they could use the Uttarakhand UCC draft as a template.

Russian oil cargoes are still sailing via the Red Sea to get to India, according to S&P Global. Iran-backed Houthi rebels have been attacking commercial ships in the Red Sea since November. Many commercial shipping lines and vessels have rerouted from the Red Sea to avoid getting caught in the attacks. It's not immediately clear why ships carrying Russian oil to India haven't rerouted to avoid potential attacks in the Red Sea. Hardeep Singh Puri, India's petroleum and natural gas minister, said recently that the country is monitoring the situation in the Red Sea.

Goldman Sachs announced its 2023 class of managing directors Thursday afternoon, giving 608 employees the coveted title. It's a smaller cohort than the bank's 2021 MD class, down 5% amid a dealmaking slowdown. Still, Goldman appears to have taken pains to promote employees in revenue-generating divisions like investment banking and trading. Goldman says the percentage of women it promoted as part of the 2023 MD class sets a record, up 1% from 2021. Two years ago, Goldman promoted the largest managing director class in its history, naming 643 employees to the designation in 2021.

Oct 30 (Reuters) - Realty Income (O.N) said on Monday it would buy Spirit Realty Capital (SRC.N) in an all-stock deal valued at $9.3 billion as it looks to expand its real estate portfolio. Commercial real estate, especially offices, has been hit by interest rates hikes and workers choosing to stay at home. The combined portfolio is expected to result in reduced rent concentration for Realty Income's clients, while increasing the combined portfolio's annualized contractual rent from $3.8 billion to $4.5 billion, Realty Income said. Wells Fargo is the financial adviser to Realty Income, while J.P. Morgan Securities and Morgan Stanley & Co are serving as financial advisers to Spirit Realty. Spirit Realty primarily invests in single-tenant real estate assets given on long-term leases.

Subway India is now charging extra for a cheese slice
  + stars: | 2023-08-11 | by ( ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
Reuters —Subway sandwiches in India will no longer come with the option of a free cheese slice following revisions to its menu that analysts say are more about cost-cutting than just a matter of taste. They now charge 30 rupees ($0.40) extra for the cheese slice in most sandwiches, but are offering a free “cheezy” sauce instead. Subway has “replaced the cheese slice with liquid cheese blend … You just lost a loyal customer,” one unimpressed customer, Sumit Arora, wrote on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. A Subway store manager in New Delhi told Reuters the new cheese sauce costs 400 rupees per kilogram. If a customer adds the cheese slice — which was once free — it will now cost up to 15% more.

Visitors gather at Applied Materials and Micron Technology kiosks before the start of 'SemiconIndia 2023', India's annual semiconductor conference, in Gandhinagar, India, July 25, 2023. REUTERS/Amit DaveNEW DELHI, Aug 4 (Reuters) - Applied Materials (AMAT.O) wants its suppliers from Europe, Japan and elsewhere to set up operations in India, as the semiconductor toolmaker works to expand the local supply chain, its India head told Reuters. Applied Materials does not manufacture in India - and has no plans to - but having suppliers based locally will help its new engineering centre speed up technology development and testing. Such investment creates opportunities for Applied Materials, the world's biggest maker of tools used in manufacturing chips. Applied Materials started its India operations in 2002 and has about 7,500 employees in the country working in product development, software and other business operations.
